The threat of climate change puts at risk our planet’s capacity to support life. The demand for clean alternative energy is the only way that we can insure human survival. Climate change is one of the most important issues of our time. The debate is over: Climate change is real, it’s caused by human activity and is already causing devastating damage to the entire planet.
If we don’t act boldly to combat climate change, the CIA says that a warming planet will increase international instability and the Pentagon has already been preparing to wage war for water based on assumptions that this will be necessary.
We must move forward with climate justice policies that recognize the public health risks faced by low-income and minority communities.
Some politicians still refuse to recognize the reality of climate change. In the year 2016, it’s a national embarrassment. The United States should make it a priority to lead the world in combating climate change. We need real leadership on this issue.
Donald Trump’s climate change skepticism has no place in the Oval Office. We must do all we can to ensure that he does not become president because that would literally pose a threat to the continuation of life on Earth. I hope the Republicans listen to what the Pope has to say. Denying the science related to climate change is no longer acceptable.
We must aggressively combat climate change by moving to clean, sustainable power sources, improving energy efficiency and imposing a tax on carbon. The fossil fuel industry tells us that we cannot move aggressively to combat climate change. But that is precisely what we must do.
Putting a price on carbon via a carbon tax is one of the most cost-effective strategies for quickly fighting climate change. Receipts from a carbon tax may be invested in building new solar plants, a high tech energy grid as well as vehicles and appliances that run on clean electricity. Better still would be government-funded research on scale with the Manhattan Project, which perfected atomic technology during World War II in a winner-take-all race with Axis engineers. With atmospheric carbon now above 400 ppm, we are surely in crisis.
Mother Nature is not demanding that we choose, “Your money or your life?” Since clean energy is actually expected to be an economic boon, it would be better stated, fossil fuel industry profits or your children’s lives. Fracking pollutes water, degrades air quality and worsens climate change. No amount of regulation can make it safe. We need to put an end to fracking all over this country. Wealth cannot exist without life and combating climate change is a matter of survival.
