Questions and Answers

We have responded to a number of surveys and interviews. Here are the answers we gave progressive organizations:

Progressive Change Committee

JOBS & UNIONS, SOCIAL INSURANCE

Do you support a major public investment in infrastructure jobs — of at least $1 trillion over 5 years as called for in a U.S. Senate bill supported by the AFL-CIO and American Society of Civil Engineers — in order to repair crumbling schools and highways, wire the country with high-speed Internet, and ensure that states have the resources needed to keep teachers, police, and firefighters working?
Yes
Do you support a Green New Deal to create millions of clean-energy jobs in areas like wind and solar energy?
Yes
Do you support passing a “Full Employment Act” guaranteeing that any American who wants a job will have one — including public works projects like repairing bridges and roads, wiring rural America with high-speed internet, and other long-term investments in the economy?
Yes
Do you support a strong Employee Free Choice Act, along the lines of the original proposal in 2007, which would increase democracy in the workplace with “card-check” elections?
Yes
Do you support raising the minimum wage to $12 or more and indexing it to the cost of living so its value does not erode over time?
No (I support raising the minimum wage to $15 or more and indexing it to the cost of living)
Do you support raising the minimum wage to $15 or more and indexing it to the cost of living so its value does not erode over time?
Yes
Do you support eliminating the loophole that allows employers to pay tipped workers less than the minimum wage?
Yes
Do you support repealing Taft-Hartley, which allows anti-union “right to work” laws in the states?
Yes
Do you oppose the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal?
Yes
Do you oppose “fast track,” which allows a vote with no opportunity for amendments or filibuster on the Trans-Pacific Partnership and any other trade deals negotiated by presidents over the next six years?
Yes
Do you support fair trade that protects American workers, the environment, and jobs?
Yes
Do you support modernizing overtime rules so employees making less than $51,000 a year are eligible for overtime pay? ($51,000 is approximately what the threshold would be today if the rate set in 1975 were adjusted for inflation.)
Yes
Will you vote against any bill that cuts Social Security benefits, Medicare benefits, or Medicaid benefits — including raising the retirement age and cutting cost-of-living adjustments? (Benefit cuts can be defined as anything that makes beneficiaries pay more for their care.)
Yes
Do you support adding trillions to Social Security’s current surplus by “scrapping the cap” so that millionaires and billionaires pay Social Security taxes on more than just the first $118,500 of their income?
Yes
Given that corporations are increasingly eliminating pensions, do you support the call from Elizabeth Warren and others in Congress to expand Social Security benefits, paid for by “scrapping the cap” on what high-income earners pay into Social Security — resulting in an average worker receiving $1,570 more per year by age 75 and $2,131 more per year by age 85?
Yes
Do you support saving taxpayers approximately $230 billion over 10 years by allowing Medicare and Medicaid to negotiate prices with pharmaceutical companies?
Yes
Do you support a Medicare Buy-In for All, which would allow any American the choice of buying into the federal Medicare program instead of buying private insurance?
Yes

WALL STREET AND CORPORATIONS, FAIR TAXATION

Do you support breaking up “too big to fail” financial institutions, even if that means breaking up some of the major power players on Wall Street?
Yes
Do you believe there has been inadequate prosecution of bankers who engaged in illegal activity before and during the 2007-2008 financial crisis?
Yes
Do you believe the SEC should bring big banks that break the law to trial, not just agree to out-of-court settlements with them?
Yes
Do you want to end the tax loophole that allows Wall Street banks and other corporations that get caught breaking the law to deduct the cost of their fines or penalties from their tax bill?
Yes
Do you support restoring the wall between commercial and investment banking (Glass-Steagall) to protect families’ savings from being used for risky Wall Street speculation?
Yes
Do you support a financial transactions fee (aka “speculator’s fee”), which would primarily impact major investors, not ordinary investors, in order to make Wall Street pay their fair share and reduce reckless speculation?
Yes
Do you support giving shareholders a binding vote to approve or disapprove of CEO pay packages?
Yes
A tax loophole allows corporations to take tax deductions for executive compensation. Do you support eliminating that deduction for companies that pay their CEOs more than 50 times their median worker salary, in order to encourage them to pay employees more and reduce income inequality?
Yes
Do you support Elizabeth Warren’s call for a banking option through the U.S. Post Office, to provide competition to Wall Street banks and give consumers more choice for basic services?
Yes
Do you support increasing income taxes on those making over $250,000 a year in wages or capital gains so that our system of taxation is more progressive and everyone pays their fair share?
Yes
The Fairness In Taxation Act (HR 1723) would raise nearly a trillion dollars over 10 years by raising taxes on income above $1 million per year. It would create new tax brackets above the current top rate of 39.6% — 45% for income above $1 million, 46% above $10 million, 47% above $20 million, 48% above $100 million, and 49% above $1 billion — all below the top rate of 50% under Ronald Reagan. Would you co-sponsor this bill?
Yes
Do you support ending “carried interest” — the loophole that allows Mitt Romney to pay 14% or less in taxes?
Yes
Do you agree that tax reform that is “revenue neutral” represents a lost opportunity to make big corporations and the wealthy pay their fair share toward vital investments like infrastructure?
Yes
Comments on any of your responses for this section:
We must restore tax rates on upper income Americans and corporations to levels they were at during the economic ‘boom’ years to reverse the severe growth in the national debt since Republican President Ronald Reagan sparked massive deficit spending with reckless tax cuts for the rich. The Reagan & Bush tax cuts have had no positive economic impact, but they have created massive inequality.

DEMOCRACY, EDUCATION, ENVIRONMENT

Do you support establishing a system of elections in which candidates who choose to accept only small donations (below a level around $150) receive public matching funds, allowing candidates to spend more time talking to voters and less time calling wealthy out-of-state donors?
Yes
Do you support reforming our voting system by implementing “same-day voter registration” nationwide?
Yes
Do you support reforming our voting system by implementing automatic voter registration nationwide when people turn 18 years old, as Oregon recently did?
Yes
Do you support a constitutional amendment to reverse the impact of Citizens United and fix campaign finance problems that pre-date Citizens United?
Yes
Do you support requiring corporations registered in your state to seek approval from shareholders before spending funds on political campaigns or organizations that engage in political activity?
Yes
Do you believe the SEC should use its existing power to require that all publicly traded companies disclose any political donations or donations to trade associations or non-profits that engage in political activity?
Yes
Will you fight to ensure voting rights for all Americans age 18 and above are protected with no exceptions?
Yes
Would you agree to at least one Open Debate in your race with questions submitted and chosen by the public online?
Yes
In this campaign, are you rejecting money if offered from Wall Street PACs and oil company PACs?
Yes
Do you believe climate change is real, caused by humans, and requires immediate action from the government?
Yes
Do you support public investment in renewable energy and energy efficiency, paid for by a carbon tax, to generate good jobs and growth while reducing carbon emissions?
Yes
Do you oppose the construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline?
Yes: I oppose all expansion of fossil fuel infrastructure, fracking and use.
Do you support a repeal of the fracking exemption from the Safe Drinking Water Act?
Yes
Do you support federal investment to retrain coal and oil workers for good-paying clean energy jobs, such as building a wind or solar energy grid?
Yes
Do you support federal financial assistance to states and students so that we can achieve a national goal of debt-free education at all public universities and colleges in America?
Yes
Do you support federal investment in universal Pre-K?
Yes: I support free public education from the age of 3 to a college degree.
The federal government currently lends to banks at very low interest rates. Would you support a plan to extend those low rates to student loans?
Yes
Do you support any form of student loan debt forgiveness?
Yes
Comments on any of your responses for this section:
Pipelines are being proposed in NJ and I am among the many who are protesting their construction. I doubt Wall Street and oil company PACs would ever offer contributions to me, since I want to ban the burning of fossil fuels. I say corrupt campaign financing is the major issue of our time, because until we have fair elections, politicians will betray the public on everything else.

OTHER

Do you support putting major restrictions on the Pentagon’s transfer of surplus military equipment designed for war zones to our local community police departments?
Yes: We must demilitarize local police, curb use of force and establish a partnership between the community and law enforcement agencies. Too many crimes are unsolved in New Jersey and it signifies broken, ineffectual government.
Do you support federal legislation requiring an outside special prosecutor for cases involving killings by police, to eliminate conflicts of interest?
Yes: I also support Civilian Review Boards for handling police complaints. Police deserve our respect but they must also live up to high standards.
Do you support comprehensive immigration reform that includes a path to citizenship?
Yes
Do you support, and will you work to uphold, the rights decided by Roe v. Wade?
Yes: The right to choose a safe, legal abortion is a matter of privacy and fundamental human rights.
Do you support allowing LGBT couples to marry and receive benefits equal to those of opposite-sex married couples?
Yes
A federal judge recently called the NSA’s mass surveillance of the phone and Internet records of millions of everyday Americans “Orwellian” and unconstitutional. Will you fight to stop the NSA’s mass surveillance?
Yes
Do you support prohibiting the government from collecting the phone and Internet records of millions of ordinary Americans unless a court decides there is probable cause of criminal action or terrorist activity?
Yes
Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-WI), who authored the PATRIOT Act, said, “I can say that if Congress knew what the NSA had in mind in the future immediately after 9/11, the PATRIOT Act never would have passed, and I never would have supported it.” Do you support the bipartisan Surveillance State Repeal Act (SSRA), which repeals the PATRIOT Act?
Yes
Do you support the principle of Network Neutrality to guarantee the Internet is a level playing field for all users?
Yes
Do you support closing loopholes in gun background check laws?
Yes
Comments on any of your responses for this section:
NSA’s mass surveillance was illegal and I would advocate for the release of Chelsea Manning and a full pardon for Edward Snowden, as well as an end to any criminal prosecution of journalists, including Julian Assange, for matters related to publication of government secrets. In fact, I would propose that ‘government secrets’ be prohibited except for protection of personal privacy (eg. medical records) and concealment of methods for killing (eg. how to make nuclear weapons). A democratic government should not have secrets from its citizens.

FIGHT THEORY

Are you willing to make promises (aka take “pledges“) on some issues that represent your core Democratic and progressive beliefs, so that voters know on which issues you will draw a line in the sand?
Yes
If over 75% of the public supports the progressive position held by congressional Democrats on a high-profile issue, and less than 25% supports the position held by congressional Republicans, would you fight for the progressive position against obstructionist Republicans?
Yes
If elected, do you promise not to join the Blue Dog Caucus, the New Democrat Caucus, and Third Way?
Yes: I am best described as a New Deal Democrat or Great Society Democrat, who is committed to making government a force for good.
If elected, do you promise not to sign on as a member of No Labels?
Yes
If elected to the House, do you promise to be a dues-paying member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and work to make it the most effective bloc possible?
Yes
Comments on any of your responses for this section:
Blue Dogs, New Democrats, Third Way and No Labels betray fundamental American values that are central to the Democratic Party. Republicans do not shy away from being branded ‘conservatives’ even though they are most con artists! I won’t step back from being a bold progressive and the liberal tradition that gave us the New Deal or Great Society. There should be a Progressive Caucus in the US Senate and I will work to form an alliance with people like Elizabeth Warren, Sherrod Brown and others like them.
The military-industrial complex has evolved into something worse than Ike ever imagined. Bu intruding on the electoral process, owners of wealth put people in office who award military contracts that make them richer, which they funnel into tax-free non-profits and use to repeat the cycle.
I was a ‘Democrats for Change” challenger in 2010, when I got 47% in a primary for County Clerk and helped 24 other contenders seek offices in Union County, NJ. We succeeded in electing a new mayor & council president in Linden, and several other municipal council members.

SHORT ANSWERS

Republican President and military general Dwight Eisenhower said 50 years ago: “We must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.” What do you think the state of the military-industrial complex is today?
The military-industrial complex has evolved into something worse than Ike ever imagined. Bu intruding on the electoral process, owners of wealth put people in office who award military contracts that make them richer, which they funnel into tax-free non-profits and use to repeat the cycle.
Can you share a time in your career or background when you challenged the Democratic Party establishment?
I was a ‘Democrats for Change” challenger in 2010, when I got 47% in a primary for County Clerk and helped 24 other contenders seek offices in Union County, NJ. We succeeded in electing a new mayor & council president in Linden, and several other municipal council members.

Can you share specific examples where you worked with grassroots groups or the larger progressive movement to achieve a goal?
I have been active with MoveOn.Org in the ‘move your money’ campaign and with Americans for tax Justice, exposing Global Tax Dodgers. I subscribe to Physicians for Social Responsibility on Climate Change matters. participate with several environmental groups, women’s rights organizations, peace activists. I should make an extensive list. Thanks for bringing this to my attention
What, if anything, would you change in the Affordable Care Act — and the Democratic strategy during the health care fight?
I support Medicare for All. There was no reason to adopt more than 100 amendments if there were no Republican votes gained by that. President Obama should have shut down two-thirds of the post offices in Nebraska and then invited Ben Nelson to the White House to discuss whether he could be a little more supportive…
What does an “inside-outside partnership” between elected leaders on the inside and the grassroots on the outside look like, and how will it impact your governing?
I have been active with MoveOn.Org in the ‘move your money’ campaign and with Americans for tax Justice, exposing Global Tax Dodgers. I would welcome frequent input and advice from constituencies that advocate progressive view points. This could require a more complex answer, but essentially I would not lose sight of my reason for running or who helped me succeed. I have 200,000 identified supporters from the work I did during Bernie’s race for president and I am working to organize a slate of candidates in the 2017 primary. I have little respect for people who change to fit the establishment once they get elected, and I hope to be a very different kind of leader. Then again, it helps to have the courage of my convictions.
